Territory Manager

Job description

About us

Smiler is the world’s first on the spot photography marketplace that brings photographers and consumers together at touristic hotspots and other leisure locations to capture valuable memories in high quality - for everyone, everywhere. Smiler is an ambitious start up, staffed by a team of industry experts who are as determined as each other to go the extra mile.

What you will be doing in this role

Your territory is your part of the business within Smiler - it’s your responsibility, and as such you'll be managing a team of talented individuals in France and The Netherlands to help them train and coach more photographers, secure more fantastic locations for them to work at and generally taking day to day stewardship of all things that happen in your territories.

You have a keen eye for detail and as such, you'll understand all that's happening in Amsterdam or Paris from a quick glance at our internal tools that show performance, volume and revenue. From these data insights, you'll be able to forecast where you'll end up at the end of the month, which locations need more attention and focus and which photographers are performing super well. On top of this, you'll act swiftly and decisively to keep the ship sailing straight. The role (and the company!) are relatively new, so you'll have a lot of creative freedom to get things done. Your insights and observations will play a role in shaping the future of the department and company.

About your team
We are a team of passionate people, who truly see the value in Smiler. So far, we’ve got an international base, with several different nationalities. We are learning from each other and together we make the biggest impact possible. We have lots in common - the most important thing being: we all love to smile, and we’re all avid travellers who see opportunity in places you wouldn’t necessarily immediately see. That’s also why we believe in working anywhere. We celebrate our adventurous travel passion by giving the freedom to work wherever you want. Made up of industry experts from all walks of life, you’ll be able to learn and teach.

Within the Smiler organization you will be part of the Commercial team. In this role you will work closely together with our Head of Commercial and you are responsible for your team, your territories revenue targets and contributions to the management team.

Job requirements

Your key responsibilities

  • You'll understand the lay of the land and your territories. NL and France are two of our biggest territories, and therefore we require a lot from them in terms of revenue and results.

  • You'll pre-empt any shortfall in revenue through meticulous and strong planning. Always looking a few months ahead and knowing what the next quarter looks like before we're even there.

  • You can see what works and what doesn't, and as a consequence you'll make data driven decisions to either improve what's good, or cut what's bad.

  • Your team will be reporting in to you on a weekly basis. You'll have to strike that balance between driving high performance and also people management. Empathy is a strong soft skill of yours, but equally you know how to motivate and ask for more.

  • You'll be reporting in to the Head of Commercial who will ask you for your numbers, your active photographer base, your training drop off stats and a range of other figures on a weekly basis. You know how to manage up as well as down.

  • Mystic Meg (google her) has got nothing on you. You see what others don't, and act on the observations well in advance of them becoming a problem.

  • In all seriousness, planning is essential to the job. This mean you're on top of next week, next month and next quarter. You also know when all the top attractions are coming up to tender, and are on top of the outreach / prospecting needs in your regions.

  • Overall the main skills that will make you good at this job are:
    • Organisation. You're on top of your teams, and you know your numbers, but perhaps more importantly, the reasons behind any variations in your numbers.
    • You'll be asking a lot of your team and the wider organisation on a weekly basis. It's important that you can communicate effectively, empathetically and energetically.
    • You're competitive, but not annoying with it. Team work really does make the dream work, but we all still strive to be number 1.
    • You're a go-getter and have show some serious initiative. You'll be given full training and advice at every step of the way, but sometimes even we won't know the answer and you'll have to make it work / figure it out.

What you are able to bring to the table

  • Ideally experienced people management skills (although this is not vital as you'll be given training)

  • Solid commercial / sales / business development background with proven results

  • Ability to communicate in English confidently and clearly with various audiences both verbally and in writing. French is also a desired language.

  • Avid listener and learner with exceptional organisational skills

  • Problem solver with a ‘can-do’ attitude.

  • Start up Experience

  • Preferred: familiarity with tooling such as Hubspot, Google suite and general data tools.
